At the Annual Meeting last December, I remember telling the members present that the one question people had asked me most often was, “are you ready for this?” I also remember asking those present, “do you know something I don’t know?”
Four months later I can definitely answer both questions: no one was ready for what we have faced lately and what we still face in the near future.
The Board of Directors has been meeting often, lately on Zoom, to discuss the financial position of the club. The conservative approach the board is taking, and not a “knee-jerk” reaction to the situation around us, will preserve the value of every member’s equity in BCYC. Each of us owns part of the club; we have a mortgage, bills and staff to maintain, similar to our personal homes. Decisions are made in the best interest of BCYC and its members/owners and they are reviewed almost weekly.
Were we ready for this? No. What I am seeing in members is creativity in adapting to our new world. BCYC Strong is not just a catchy phrase right now. Communication between members, sharing projects (I just finished my first 1000-piece puzzle and EB Barden has finished two!), photos of projects, pets and families, members picking up meals for other members, grocery shopping for each other, making masks and giving them away (Dee Shandera made nautical-themed masks for all front-of-the house employees, and Director Cary Breeden made masks with the burgee for the entire staff), and staying socially connected without socially gathering together. “Curiouser and curiouser” are words that come to mind as we navigate this new world of ours.
Are we ready for this now? Yes. We are ready to do what needs to be done, and we are doing it together, with each other’s help and support.
