The Junior Board of Directors has been working hard the last couple of months to plan Bingo Night, March 29. We look forward to hosting a fun night for friends and family! Reservations for the event should be made on the BCYC website or by calling the club office.
With it now being March, I am happy to say that it is officially spring. I am personally excited for the change in seasons, because of the sailing that comes with spring. Spring sailing is some of my favorite times out on the water, because it tends to bring better breeze and more consistent wind to Newport Beach. Additionally, the Spring Junior Sailing Program kicks off March 8, and I’m eager to get back out on the water coaching our club’s junior sailors.
Last month, I shared our tradition of flying the international maritime flags of the initials of our recently deceased members. I thought we’d continue the flag theme and test your knowledge of the officers’ flags!

At BCYC, we have the tradition of flying the flags of the flag and fleet officers when they are in attendance at the club. This is a tradition of many yacht clubs across the United States. The 13 stars on the flag officers’ flags represent the original 13 colonies found on the “Betsy Ross” flag with a fouled anchor in the union. The medallion configuration was entered into official use in 1848, following an act of Congress that made it the official signal for United States pleasure sailing vessels. Flags flown at BCYC are: flag officers – commodore, vice commodore, rear commodore; fleet officers – port captain, power fleet captain, sail fleet captain. When past or current officers are dining at the club, a small flag with the officer’s rank is placed on their table. These officers include the ones discussed above plus the club secretary, treasurer, judge advocate, chaplain and staff commodores. A flag is placed for each ranking person at the table. This is a wonderful way for the members to get to know the BCYC officers!

Now let’s see how many of our officers’ flags you can identify! Do you know which officer is aboard his/her boat or dining at the club by looking at his/her flag?
